Two productions with music by Owain have been shortlisted for awards in this year’s ‘Celtic Media Festival’ to be held in Caernarfon, Wales in March 2009.
The first is under the ‘Arts’ category for BBC’s ‘Before Your Eyes: Cofi Opera’, a documentary following the story of an ambitious project to create a community opera on the Ysgubor Goch estate in Caernarfon. Owain wrote the music for the opera with the children as part of a music in education project run by Cofis Bach. Producer: Marc Edwards.
The second nomination is under the ‘Short Drama’ category for Rhys Edwards’ film ‘The Project’.
Synopsis: Dylan has an idea to try and convince American Tourists that they have stumbled into a musical. In preparing for this, he recruits Bob, a genius farmer who has ‘Shepherd’s Tourettes’ , and Ianto the Swear, a foul mouthed musician. After deciding on the setting and subject of the musical, Dylan rounds up the Americans to Castell Dolbadarn for a fitting finale.
The Festival is an annual three-day celebration of broadcasting, film talent and excellence from Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Cornwall and Brittany.
Cofi Opera

‘Daily Post’ Article March 08
YOUNGSTERS on a housing estate are preparing to stage their very own opera.
Trwbl yn y Gwynt (Trouble in the wind) is a fusion of classical music and rap by Cwmni Cofis Bach.
Caernarfon residents are known colloquially as “Cofis”.
The word “Cofi” is also used locally in Caernarfon to describe the local dialect.
A multi-media production using black and white footage of Lloyd George and from the First World War, it offers a rare opportunity to hear the voice of the former Prime Minister speaking at the National Eisteddfod during wartime and asking: “Why should we not sing?”
With music by young composer Owain Llwyd and words by Meirion McIntyre Huws, Trwbl yn y Gwynt is based on “the ups and downs of Caernarfon life”.
The two have spent the last six months working with the children and youth of the Ysgubor Goch estate, Caernarfon to create and compose words and music for the opera which will be staged at Noddfa Community Centre on Saturday, March 29.
This week the cast will be busy on rehearsals.
Among the stars taking part in the unique collaboration are prize winning tenor Robyn Lyn and soprano Llio Evans.
Also appearing is rapper and beat boxer Ed Holden from the band Genod Droog.
Cwmni Cofis Bach coordinator and artistic director Manon Llwyd said: “This is a one act opera and consists of up-and-coming, home-grown talent.
“It also mixes the same with professional classical/contemporary artistes, actresses, winning Eisteddfod bards, and musicians prevalent in the contemporary Welsh music scene.”
Since its birth four years ago Cwmni Cofis Bach secured grants from varying sources such as BBC Children in Need, Welsh Assembly Government, Tai Eryri and others to stage shows.
The sessions are held in Noddfa – the estate’s focal point and its place of worship.
Ms Llwyd said: “I have no doubt that without this project, and the associated funding, that the children of the Ysgubor Goch estate would not be afforded access to such a programme.”
